This is not an official Cougar Mountain Zoo Blog. It is a result of our love for the animals and respect for those that take care of them. If you would like to add to the site just email larrykcragun@yahoo.com with your additions. They are certainly most welcome. Larry Cragun

8-week old Royal White Bengal Tiger ‘Almos’

Originally uploaded by SDart

This photo was taken when Almos’ was an 8-week old Royal White Bengal Tiger. He was about 12 pounds then. Add 300 to that now, 14 months later. However, he and his buddy Taj still have an amazing effect on me. I am truly glad we had an encounter with them.

They are territorial that is why. So explains Robyn: They don’t leave their perch as the perch is theirs. They are so territorial they won’t leave to prevent another from taking their perch.

As many times as I have been there - I have never seen two together like this. I have seen their handlers pick them up for demonstration purposes, otherwise they don’t leave.

Have You Seen This Sign On Newport Way?

So many years I drove past this sign in ignorance…. I say that because I assumed this was a little farm type of zoo. After all our kids own a little farm with horses, cows, and chickens. Then we started writing blogs about Issaquah and became much more curious about our town.  We discovered the Cougar Mountain Zoo. This is a great place - one of our favorite parts of Issaquah. We hope you discover it too. Family memeberships are the way to go. We will add to this blog often - so come back and visit, we will keep you informed.

A Delightful Visit - The Cougar Mountain Zoo

Here is part  a post I wrote on the Seattle P I Real Estate Professionals blog. (The full article)

What’s in your neighborhood? What is the favorite thing you enjoy about where you live? Northgate - The Mall? Jaunita - The beach? Kirkland - Downtown? Fremont - Woodland Park? Maple Valley - A nice rural drive? Bellevue - Bellevue Square?

These have been my favorites in the over 30 years I have lived here.

But my recent favorite had been a hidden opportunity, the Cougar Mountain Zoo. This place gets so little fan fare many locals just don’t bother finding it. That is my story. Looking for something to write about last winter, my wife Kathleen braved the weather and visited the Reindeer Festival at Cougar Mountain Zoo.

TaJ And Almos’

My first experience with Taj and Almos’ “The Boys” as our favorite zoo keeper, Robyn Barfoot, calls them was a never forget experience. They had recently arrived and Kathleen and I went in for “an encounter”. I think they were about 16 #’s then. Taj was too wild already to be let out with us, but Almos was allowed for us to feed and pet him. His skin was so tight. Unlike our cats he was all muscle. It was a true love at first sight experience. Enjoy these photos and I will write more later. Lar

Taj was not happy that Almos’ was getting bottle fed. He went nuts with a raging 20# yowl or growl.

Last week I returned again for another visit. They are over 300 pounds now. They were sleepy and laying on their perch. Taj, it seemed remembered me. He sauntered over as if to say hi. He layed down by the fence and looked up at me. Thank heavens for the fence, I would have probably forgotten he was a Tiger.
